Students are assured educations befitting their pedigrees, in their choice of two academic tracks: Guided Study with professors, or Independent Study with peers.

As rivalry between the two escalates, one rogue professor is sent to recruit "problem" Independents to her class. While she doesn't owe either track favors, there's a darker mystery at hand—and she's not letting anyone fall prey to it.
